“EDUKATA – Service design as a tool for developing school culture” now forms an official part of the in-service primary school teacher training in Finland, supported and funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture. This training program offers continuous education to headmasters and head teachers to develop schools using service design methods and tools.
What is EDUKATA and what does it do?
EDUKATA® is a participatory design model for educators. It helps school staff to design together learning activities for students or to find solutions to challenges in their daily work. It was created to bring methods of design thinking and service design to the school context. It is a process that enriches the culture of sharing, ideation and knowledge building among participants. The EDUKATA model aims at becoming aware of our and others’ ideas and beliefs through dialogue. It’s a tool to create shared understanding, a vision, goals and action needed for reaching them. The power of EDUKATA is that it involves the whole school staff thanks to the participatory nature of service design methods. It helps schools to reach their objectives in an iterative and human-centric way.
Continuous feedback made possible by LifeLearn Platform
For the next academic year 2018-2019 there will be a group of Finnish 40 headmasters and headteachers involved in the EDUKATA service design process. Two to three participants from each school will learn how to facilitate service design processes at their own schools. The EDUKATA training for headmasters will consist of four contact days. In addition participants will document their process and learning path to LifeLearn Platform where they can get guidance from the trainers during the whole process, get peer support from other headmasters, as well as share their ideas and findings with all the participants.
